A major Latin music retail chain claims that Jennifer Lopez has forgotten her roots. They’ve banned all J. Lo CDs from their stores.
Jennifer Lopez was in the Bronx this week signing autographs at an F.Y.E. store. However, Ritmo Latino, a chain of 50 Latin music stores, claims J. Lo is “dissing Hispanic shops” by not showing up to them on her promotional tour.
Ritmo President David Massry alleged that J.Lo:
…Has refused personally to promote her new CD in any of our stores and won’t appear at other outlets devoted only to Latin music. We’ve supported her from the beginning. Now we’re told by her record company she will only visit Anglo retail outlets.
The strange thing is that Jennifer Lopez’s new album is sung only in Spanish. The title is “Como Ama una Mujer” (or “How a Woman Loves”). Wouldn’t it make sense to hit up these Latin stores as well to promote a Spanish album?
Jennifer Lopez has been noticeably absent from Hispanic neighborhoods.
Fans have differing opinions saying supportive things like:
J.Lo is a Boricua from the block. She’s just gone on to bigger and better things. You can’t penalize her for that.
… and negative things like:
One of the few dissenters was eighth-grade teacher Shakira Lleras, 27, who said, “I can understand the ban and why they’re upset. Just look around the city. Not too many people identify with her and the life she leads.”
Well, what is our view on this issue? We think it should be covered in more depth… on the Who Gives a Shit channel.
